War Diary

1915-09-01
Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Hebuterne
Entry Working parties as on August 31st. A patrol, under Lieut CRUTTWELL (Corporal Taylor, Privates Smit, Dutton, Gibbs) went out from trench HOCHE at 3.0a.m. They reconnoitred defences in front of German Sap-head finding a forward post with room for 5 with a 'trip' wire in front; they examined the main wire in front of the sap. The enemy apparently stands to arms at 3.30a.m. as the conversation became audible along the line at that time. They seem to come down two Communication trenches on either side FERME SANS NOM. The patrol returned at 4.10a.m. The 3 platoons of the 11th WARWICKS returned form the trenches for 24 hours, the line being held for this time by the two Companies, B and D, in the usual way. The move was completed by 5.45p.m. A Company went to baths in the morning; C Company in the afternoon. The enemy's guns were quiet most of the day - a welcome change from yesterday. A fine day with rain in the evening and night. Remarks Sketch attached. Col SEROCOLD returned from the Brigade in the afternoon.
