War Diary

1915-08-30
Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Hebuterne
Entry Working parties as on the 29th. The enemy were evidently trying new guns all the morning, as their shells were falling in all directions. They commenced about 6.30a.m. and finished about 1.0p.m. The zone on the Centre Battery (see 29th) was slightly extended to our right, our front now being covered by two Batteries - 3rd Warwicks on our left, 1st Glosters on the right. A patrol (Lieut Calder and L/C Crust) went out from trench BUGEAUD about 9.30p.m.: they thoroughly recconnoitred the front, returning about 12.30. A fine day, but rain from 9 - 10p.m. Remarks Casualty: 1 killed. This Cpl was in charge of a small working party in a Communication Trench. When the first shell fell near them he ordered his men to take cover in the dug-outs near. He was the last man in the trench when another shell fell directly in it.
