Entry | Nos.5,6,& 7 Platoons of the 11th WARWICKS went up to the trenches for instruction - No 6 to A Company: Nos 5 &7 to C Company. New orders re the instructions to the attached Platoons were received at 2.30p.m. No 1 Each platoon will do one hour of 24 hours individual trench instruction. No 2 Each platoon will do one hour of 24 hours collective trench instruction. No 3 On the night of 2/3 September a Company will be put in as far as possible as a complete Company, under their own Company Commander, but under the CO Battalion to which attached for 48 hours. An enemy's working pary was heard on the PUISIEUX Road at 3.50a.m. The 3rd GLOSTER Battery put in 2 shells when work ceased for a time. A few shells were fired at the trench end of SONIS about 8.45a.m. and over BUGEAUD about 3.0p.m. There seems to be increasing evidence that a recent change in the troops opposite has been made. (a) Sniping has greatly increased in accuracy and in amount. (b) Black soil has been put over the chalk trench opposite HOCHE and does not look like soil likely to have been excavated from the trench: it must therefore be put there for cover. But the original occupants were plainly content to leave the trench white. Taking these two points, with the attention paid to a grave on the BRAYALLE Road, lately noticed, and such points as the band in PUISIEUX, it seems that one is justified in thinking that some new Force is holding their line. A hot day. Two red fire balls were sent up from the enemy's lines between 11 and 11.30p.m. some minutes between each. Immediately after the second had been fired German guns opened fire on the line adjoining our right Company. Working parties were found as follows:- Carrying, Rations, Carrying bricks for the first line, deepening and bricking Communication Trenches, and digging new trenches under RE supervision |
