Entry | Work for A and C Coys as on the 22nd. Dug-outs in the BRICKFIELDS were cleaned and sprayed. Trench GUDIN was shelled about 7.0a.m. and desultory MG fire went on most of the morning. Two of our MG's opened fire at 12.30p.m. from trenches 50 and 56. Lieut GATHORNE HARDY went out alone at 1.45p.m.to follow up his work on the night of the 22nd. About 350 yards beyond the Iron Fence he came upon a row of holes close together with parapets facing our direction. He was shot at at this point and returned about 5.0p.m. At 5.40p.m. an explosion was seen in the enemys lines by the PUISIEUX Road. Clouds of blue smoke were observed and the shock was felt in trench DURAND. A patrol of 15 men under LIEUT R CRUTTWELL went out a 9.50p.m. from trench MORAND: they proceeded S crossing BUCQUOY Rd by the "TWO TREES"; they suspected what they thought was a listening post, finding an English pattern respirator. They returned at midnight by trench HOCHE. A lovely day. Remarks Col Serocold took temporary command of Brigade at 2.30p.m. and Major Clarke of the Battn. Capt Lewis returned from leave, Capt Boyle being left in England on the Sick List. |
