Regiment | 1st Royal Berkshire |

Location | France, CUINCHY |
Entry | Quiet day. Sniping by the enemy very much less. About 11pm from one of the mines, considerable volumes of a white heavy gas came up. It was thought that the miners at work at the bottom of the mine must have been suffocated. There can be no doubt that the gas was pumped in by the enemy. VERMOREL sprayers were got to work, and after a time the gas was dispersed. A rescue party was sent down, and it was found that the gas had not penetrated the section the miners were actually working on. They were brought up. No casualties resulted. Captain Radford did invaluable work. |
