1945-02-19
Regiment 30th Royal Berkshire
Location Lottum, Holland
Entry 2359. The relief of No 2 Bn 378 Inf Regt Us Army was completed by 1400 hrs. Almost immediately A Coy received 5 81mm Mortar bombs in their area and very shortly afterwards claimed to have disposed of an enemy patrol of three men by LMG fire at 700 yards. This sector of the front is fairly quiet although the 52nd on our right have frequent arty and mortar exchanges with the enemy on the EAST bank of R MAAS. Further NORTH, the sounds of the battle south of GOCH are plainly audible and it is possible that the opposite bank may soon flare up considerably. For the time being however the noise of battle is relatively distant and with the exception of the fwd Coys offrs and men are finding it hard to realise either that the enemy is so near or the fact that battle conditions are now operative. Weather fine and not cold.
