Entry | Btn relieved by 1st Btn KINGS Regt. The relief started at 2am and by 5am all except the firing line had been relieved. The R.E. completed the execution of a mine running from the right of section A3 to the German lines a few days previous to this date. The mine went under the German front trench for about seventy yards. It was decided to explode this mine and in order to make the enemy man their trenches the following orders were given: 4am to 4.50am rifle and gun fire were kept up on the enemy's trenches 4.50 to 5 am very heavy rifle fire and the 18 pdrs fired. 5.5am the mine was exploded. This was successfully accomplished, and the air was filled with great masses of earth: It was impossible to say what the extent of damage was to the enemy but doubtless their losses were considerable. At 6am the firing line companies were relieved, and the whole Battn reached BEUVRY by 10am and went into billets there. At 1pm a telegram was received saying General E.T. Dickson, Colonel in Chief of the Regiment would arrive and inspect the Regiment. This caused intense pleasure, and at 2.45pm the General accompanied by Major F F Ready arrived. Companies were paraded in front of their billets, and the General inspected them, and spoke to each company. He left about 4pm. It is interesting to note that although the men had only come from the trenches in the morning, and had had little or no sleep the previous night, they were all shaved and well turned out. |
