Regiment | 10th Royal Berkshire |

Location | M. DAMIANO 839991, ITALY |
Entry | 0200 A Coy relieved & left M. DAMIANO NOTE ON ADMIN problems It took a laden man 4 1/2 hours to climb to Bn area. All water, amm. & rations had to be carried by hand, as the route was impassable to mules. The 2i/c established a rear HQ North of the river GARIGLIANO with all available HQ coy personnel to act as porters. These were supplemented by Mauritian & Indian porters supplied by Div. The route up the mountain was frequently shelled by the enemy, & apart from casualties, there was a tendency on the part of native porters to run away. Returning porter parties were used to bring down prisoners, & also to take detailed written reports to Bde. Water ration was usually 1 1/2 pts p. man p. day. Clothing. String vests and leather jerkins were issued. However as the Bn had originally gone up with a view to counter attacking, they had marched light, without blankets or greatcoats & there was never a sufficiency of porters to bring these up. The cold proved a definite hardship. 1230: Place CASALE 0089: Div Comd. Visited Bn & addressed all ranks congratulating them on "the magnificent performance put up by the Bn under the inspiring leadership of the Commanding Officer." Congratulatory message received from Corps Commander. |
