Entry 0030: 60 Indian, & 90 own porters arrived with amm. & water. 40 Indians with water ran away on journey uphill owing to shellfire 0615: Attack on Pt. 411 ar arranged. There was no enemy activity until assaulting coys were 30 yards from the ridge. When he opened up with M.G.'s, rifles, & grenades. D Coy Comd, and A Coy 1 Lon Scot Comd. were immediately wounded, the former very badly. D Coy 2 I/c took over command of the coy, but was also immediately wounded. The coys tried to push forward but there was some confusion as there were no officers left. Some sections got onto the ridge, and 12 prisoners were taken. But enemy fire was so heavy, & casualties so great, that coys were forced to withdraw. D Coy whose assaulting platoons were each 16 strong suffered 25 casualties almost all from these pls. 0800: Stretcher party sent out with Red Cross Flag to try to bring in Maj. West (O.C. 'D' Coy). This was done without enemy interference. Later a German officer or W.O. stood up on ridge & said in good English "Gentlemen will you please stop firing while we bring in our wounded." This was done, and stretcher parties from both sides collected wounded. 1245: Bn to be relieved night 24/25 NOTE: Coy. Strengths now: A - 4 & 48, B - 2 & 38, C - 3 & 38, D - - & 37 1635: Bde L.O. at Bn HQ. Bn to be relieved by 2/5 Queens. On relief to march to rly bridge, where tpt would meet Bn, and convey it to rest area. 1730: Bn guides sent to HQ. 1 Lon Scot. 845978
