| Entry | 0835: Bde ordered Bn to recapture Pt. 411. 0905: Orders for attack issued. "A" Coy 1 L.S. right, own D Coy left, would assault & capture Pt. 411 crossing Start Line (own F DF's) at Z. MACFORCE to support. On capture the feature would be held by the 2 assaulting coys. Arty to fire 2 - 15 to Z (arty fire plan attached). Carrying parties to take up amm. Immediately objective captured. Z to be stated later - NOT before more amm. arrived at Bn HQ 0930: Patrol from coy 7 Oxf & Bucks was holding Pt. 275, contacted Bn. Said their coy had good view of dead groung on Bn's right. Bn arranged to have wireless communication ('38'set) with them on set, so that they could give immediate warning of any enemy movements in that area. 1510: Bn porter party arrived with 10,000 rounds S.A.A. & grenades & mortar amm. 1530: Zero fixed for 1815 1545: 7 Oxf & Bucks reported enemy movement on right. Arty D.F. brought down & no further movement seen 1730: Heavy bombardment Bn area. D Coy suffered nine casualties incl. All stretcher bearers. 1740: 7 Oxf & Bucks report enemy forming up on Bn's right. This was again dispersed by arty D.F. 1745: In view of last 2 entries. C.O. postponed attack for one hour 1830: The night was very dark & there was a slight drizzle. Visibility was so bad that it was impossible to distinguish British or German helmet at 5 yards. In view of this & the broken nature of the ground, the C.O. put the attack at 1 hour's notice to see if the weather improved. 2315: Visibility unchanged. Bde said on the wireless that they had to know immediately the time of the attack as other activities depended on it. As there seemed no prospect of weather conditions improving, C.O. said attack would take place at dawn. Z = 06.15 |
