Entry | 0915: Patrol report to Bde. 1000: C.O. to Bde O. Gps. For Op. Cub. During O.Gps. It was reported at 1025 that the enemy had counter-attacked & retaken HAYBAG. Op. Cub to take place night 11/12 in conjunction with attack by 1 Lon Scot to retake HAYBAG. [For details see Bde O.O.] 1700: Bn O. Gps. For details see Bn O.O. At 1715 Div Comd. Visited Bn HQ & wished the Bn the best of successes & said Z not before 2300 hrs 1825: New Arty D.F. tasks received 1842: Sitrep to Bde 1915: C.O. 65 fd. Regt. At Bn HQ with details of Arty fire plan - see Bde O.O. 2005: Zero hour to be 2300 hrs (telephone message from Bde) 2105: Bde L.O. at Bn HQ with details of 4.2" mortar fire plan. 2130: Attacking coys left LAURO (billet area) for start line 2230: Bde O.O. No. 15 recd. NIGHT JAN 11/12 Z onwards: Coys crossed start line according to plan in spite of heavy enemy mortar and Arty D.F. fire from 2300 to 0100 on the canal banks and in the area ASPEN and forward. D Coy found PUDDING unoccupied with no mines or booby traps or signs of occupation. It was reported occupied at 0130, and the river bank forward of it cleared at 0345. There were no casualties. A Coy however had experienced heavy mortar fire both before and after leaving the Start Line in which the Coy Comd and 2 O.R.'s were reported missing, and 10 o.r.'s wounded. MELBA was reported occupied at 0213 after the A/Coy comd. Had brought down arty fire on M.G.'s at CISTERNA and ANGELO, and the river loop cleared at 0310. 2 enemy were killed and one P.W. taken in MELBA, and the following were captured:- 1 LMG, 1 x 45mm mortar, 6 rifles, one sniper attachment, one W/T set. |
