Entry | Good Friday. Still in the trenches. In the morning there was rather more shelling than usual. Possibly the enemy brought up their armoured train, as about a dozen 6" shells fell in our lines - no damage was done. Orders received about 6pm that the Btn would be relieved during the night. As soon as it was dark "B" Coy found 2 men who volunteered to cut the enemy's wire entanglements in front of their trenches. These men were given a BANGALORE TORPEDO each. These articles are tubes about 6 feet long and 4" in diameter filled with an extremely powerful explosive. The method of employing them is to push the pointed end into the wire, and by means of a self igniter to explode the torpedo. This was successfully accomplished about 9.20pm but the effect on, or the extent of damage done to the wire could not be ascertained from our lines the next morning. The explosion was terrific. |
