Entry | Night. Operation NIGHTSHIRT II. Security check of civilians in and around village of GAHLEN Map-ref 4041 Sheet 4307. GSGS 4414. OBSERVATIONS METEOROLOGICAL Rain has been above normal during the month. There has been thunder and high winds. Towards the end of the month the weather was warm, with sunny intervals. BN COMMITMENTS The Bn commitments have remained fairly constant throughout the month, and are summarised as under. A Coy DP Camp Gd and 115 Indep Inf Bde DPSD Gd. B Coy Prison Gd, Mil Gov Food Dump Gd and Security Patrols. C Coy Food Patrols and Battlefield clearance. D Coy DP Camp Gd. In addition there are Bn and Coy Gds, and men on duty at the Bde swimming pool and ENSA Cinema. OPERATIONS During the month three operations, two of them being night checks on civilians, and the third a 24hrs check on all vehicles. 1. Operation NIGHTSHIRT I. Held on the night 8/9 Aug 45, commencing at 2300hrs and finishing at 0330 hrs. The number of houses searched was 140, and the object was to check the people actually living in the house with the house list displayed on the doors. The results were as follows:- Persons without house lists on doors 19 Persons on house list but not present 27 Persons present but not on house list 22 Persons without identity papers. 5 Persons arrested 1 (Ortsgrupenleiter NSDAP) Total persons screened 76 It was found that several families slept in one house in order to protect themselves against DP's who were frequently looting in the area. Operation TARANTULA Held on 24 Aug 45 for 24 hrs from 0900hrs to 0900hrs. The object was to check all vehicles on the road in the Bn Area. Four check points were established, and a number of vehicles were impounded but later released. There were a large number of vehicles on the road without log books, work tickets and other minor technical faults. Operation NIGHTSHIRT II. Held on night 30/31 Aug, the object was the same as NIGHTSHIRT I. The results were as follows:- Persons detained 2 Persons with no house list on doors. 17. Persons on house list not in house. 31. Persons in house but not on house list. 5. Persons without identity papers. 2. Persons mentally deficient. 1. Total persons screened. 68. Instructions have been received for more severe action to be taken against DP offenders against German civilians. WELFARE There are regular cinema shows and musical concerts which are well attended as far as operational commitments permit. The Bde swimming pool in the area has been well patronised, water polo matches have been PLAYED, and also a Bde swimming gala was held. The Bn sports were held on 22 Aug 45, and resulted in a win for HQ Coy with 102 points from A Coy 62 points. Towards the end of the month training was taking place for the Bde Sports Meeting. TRAINING A number of officers and men have attended courses. Within the Bn an NCO's and potential NCO's cadres have been arranged. Routine training within the Coys has been continuing as far as operational commitments permit. EDUCATION Unit education instructors have been appointed, and the Army educational scheme starts on Sept 3rd. 10 potential instructors have attended a short course at the Bde School. |
