Regiment 5th Royal Berkshire
Location Dinslaken, Germany
Entry Activities Normal OBSERVATIONS METEOROLOGICAL Weather throughout the month has been good, normal for the time of the year, with some warm periods and severe thunder storms. There has been a high wind at times. GENERAL The Battalion Commitments have varied little throughout the month, and are summarised as under A Coy. Italian DP Camp Guard . 115 DPSD Guard B Coy Russian DP Camp Guard. One platoon with "D" Coy Jail Guard, and Court House Guard C Coy Mil Gov Food Dump Guard. Battlefield clearance. D Coy Russian DP Camp Guard. In addition Coys have to find guards for their own HQs, Bn HQ guards every fourth night, while day and night patrols are sent out regularly, house searches instituted, and Food Patrols to prevent trafficking in food. In view of the shortage of food during the coming winter looting of feed dumps is likely to increase and guards will have to be thickened. The main problem in the area has been looting and armed robbery from the Germans, and the chief offenders have been Russians, either at the DP Camp or others who have not registered as displaced personnel. A number of CI Suspects have been rounded up during the month, including some war criminals, and these have been handed over to the Field Security Section for interrogation. WELFARE The Commitments of the Bn have been heavy, but full facilities for recreation have been given to men during their off duty periods. The Bde Swimming Pool has been well patronised, and a successful Bn Gala was held there during the month. There is an ENSA theatre in the area, while weekly Symphony Concerts held at Dusseldorf have been well attended. A number of football matches have been arranged, and an Athletic meeting is being arranged for the coming month. TRAINING A number of officers and men have been sent away on courses, and within the Battalion an NCOs cadre is to commence during August. It includes training on the duties of NCOs, W.T. and Advanced Handling, Fieldcraft; P.T. and Recreational. Special courses will be run for potential NCOs in view of the possible release of the present NCOs.
