Location M.S. 16.6 on MAWCHI ROAD., Burma
Entry Bn had a quiet night. Operations: 'C' Coy 72 hr patrol to CHAUNGHNAKWA (1202) - NYAUNGBIN SAKIN (0801) - Pt 412 (0897) - TONBO (1093) left at 0700 hrs. Troop of 8th Cavalry at THANDAUNG withdrawn to 98 Bde at KWEGWE. Troop of 8th Cavalry at M.S. 13 MAWCHI ROAD, formerly under command 62 Bde, comes under Bn command. At 1630 hrs 2 Karens reported to 'A' Coy at m.s. 19 MAWCHI ROAD. They had been via hills North of road to m.s. 31 and reported the following:- (a) 1 Jap gun at m.s. 30.1, 220 yds South of road. 1 Jap gun at m.s. 29.4, 220 yds South of road. (b) Large body of Japs in chaung (229944) between m.s. 29 - 30. (c) 2 M.M.G. posts either side of road with Japs at m.s. 28. (d) No Japs, M.T. or bullock carts seen between M.S. 26 and 28. (e) Large Jap store dumps 220 yards of road in chaung (211939). The above was reported to Div I.O. and to I.O. 62 Bde, both confirmed reliability of report. 'D' Coy at THANDAUNG reported :- (a) Patrols from THANDAUNG to (1) TAWBYGYI (1409) and (2) MAWNWEGYI (2208) reported no enemy seen. (b) Major Pole (of 136 Force operating THANDAUNG area) passed through 'D' Coy area on his way to Div H.Q. Refugees arriving from North billetted by 'D' Coy at M.S. 24 THANDAUNG Road. 'D' Coy confiscated rifles & grenades from these refugees. Training: C.O. held Coy Comds Training conference (see No 1 Training directive attd Appx G.3). The following points not included in above were discussed:- (1) R.S.Ms Cadre popular with Coy Comdrs. N.C.Os to be listed in order of priority. (2) M.O. to visit Coys and give 1st Aid lectures. (3) Typhus directive issued in view of typhus scare. All Ranks clothes to be sprayed with D.B.P. on 25 June. (4) Major E.C. Pemberton M.C. to try out, on forthcoming Section Cadre, and report on the following method of sentry changing in perimeter, viz:- changing of sentries by string method controlled by Pl H.Q. section. Coys also to try out. (5) Every N.C.O. to carry Acreflavrine bottle for cuts, bites etc. Miscellaneous: Public relations reporter (Capt Stewart) and war artist from U.K. (Capt Cole) visited Bn, the latter visiting BURMA for sketches for showing in Art galleries in U.K. Will stay with Bn for a week and will accompany patrols to gain information for his sketches, with special reference to night patrolling and movement & dress of patrols. Col. Powell, G.H.Q. India, visited Bn and took away for republication:- (1) The account of Pagoda Battle (see War Diary May 5) together with enlarged sketch map of attack, fire plan etc. (2) Essay and sketch by Major M.V. Miln (O.C. 'D' Coy) of KINU Battle (see War Diary January 6,7 and 8). These may possibly be reproduced in future A.I.T. Ms Reference to Appendices: Appx J.5.
