Entry | On guerilla report of 500 Japs with bullocks in area 7589 moving South, and a second party reported at 8360, 1 Pl 'D' Coy ordered out to patrol in two parties KYEMATHE 8265, KOGWA 8563, SHANYWA 8363, NATYCOLWIN 8460. This Pl returned at 1330 hrs. Patrol to KYWEMATHE 8265 found village thinly populated. 8 Japs visited village yesterday and took away 1 Burman for a guide. Burmans told Patrol leader of 500 to 600 Japs with pack animals in jungle about 5 miles West. The Jap intention - waiting for more to concentrate in their area, and then sweep straight across road irrespective of ambushes. The Japs looked well fed and healthy, short of clothing, some wearing Burmese clothing. No food was taken from villages as Japs had enough, which they had taken from villages whilst crossing from the PROME bridge-head. Malaria prevalent. Half the Japs are armed. Patrol to KOGWA picked up confirmation of the above information. Villagers gave Japs as 500. PAYONGON 8365 empty except for Guerilla guards. SHANYWA 8363 deserted, but small village 838642 still occupied by Burmese. Jap grenade discharger bomb and charge found at 824652. At 1330 hrs 1 Pl of 'B' Coy went to KYETPAUNGGYAUNG. At 1400 hrs 'D' Coy plus C.Os Pl with 1 Bty R.As in support at OTWIN 8783 moved out to base first at ONBIN 8983 and move South to contact by patrolling a party of 300 Japs reported at 8980, and if necessary to lay ambush for night near SITTANG to prevent Japs from crossing between 8980 and 8979. Photographer and reporter for SEAC and Phoenix Magazine arrived in Bn area for photo's and stories of any actions. 'C' Coy laid on an ambush for photos and write up, and Major R.L. Twidle M.C. wrote an article on Ambushes for reporter (Capt Clarkson, R.N.V.R.). 1 Tp 8 Cavalry left to come under command 1st Assams. Air strike laid on by Div on BON and KYAUKCHAUNG cancelled owing to bad weather. Mobile cinema showed the film "Cover girl" in Bn H.Q. area. References to Appendices: None. |
