Entry | In view of comparative inactivity since Bns arrival in the NYAUNGCHIDAUK - ZEYAWADI area, a portion of the unit recommenced exercise and training. At approx 0830 hrs, information was received from 136 Force that there were 400 Japanese in the area of ZEYAWADI Pg 9646, so 'A' and 'B' Coys with in support 1 Bty Mountain Regt, 1 Tp 274 Bty and 3 dets mtrs moved out to deal with the situation. The N.Os platoon moved down and took over the 'A' Coy block posn. The plan was to block the North escape route with 'A' Coy and the West route with 'B' Coy. The E. Yorks, 17 Div, operating in the Pyu area, unknown to us were also given the same task. After contacting an E.Yorks patrol in ZEYAWADI village it was arranged that they should block the escape routes leading East and South, and having confirmed the presence of the enemy in ZEYAWADI Pl to shell and mortar them. By 1300 hrs 'A' Coy had reached the village of BANSAPTI 9548 and 'B' Coy had reached track junc. 925459, but information was then received from an E. Yorks patrol that the area was clear. The E. Yorks then turned East and intercepted a party of the enemy on the PYU CHAUNG. They engaged them with Arty and S.A. fire, and afterwards counted about 40 dead. A patrol from 'A' Coy confirmed that the area was clear, and the force then returned to ZEYAWADI. 'D' Coy laid an ambush at night in the area of BASKIPATAN 8945 the armoured cars being further down the main road. At 2300 hrs one armoured car saw a party of 8 enemy coming from the West and engaged them at about 50 yds range but their gun jammed after firing 4 rounds and the enemy got away. No further contact was made during the night. Reference to Appendices: None. |
