1945-05-07
Regiment 2nd Royal Berkshire
Location Area of Pagoda 2 & Trk junc 964988, Burma
Entry At approx 0400 hrs it was learnt that the armoured cars could not be made available and plan 2 was accordingly put into operation. At 0500 hrs the enemy fired a number of mortar bombs and grenades into the perimeter causing casualties amongst Lushai S.Bs. At 0615 hrs 'A' Coy took over Pagoda 2 area and the remainder of the bn, less 1 Tp 274 Bty which continued to support ops from same posn, carried out a right hook - route - 970976 - 980980 - 976990. At this point 1 Pl 'D' Coy patrolled forward to bridge 9799, and finding no enemy, occupied it. Simultaneously, Tac H.Q. together with 'B' and 'C' Coys, moved N.E. through the jungle to track junc 977994 and thence N.W. up the track towards the main road. 'C' Coy first came upon the enemy digging in at 975996 and in a running fight following a short Arty concentration 6 of the enemy were killed. 'B' and 'C' Coys then moved on to cut the main road at 973998, Bn HQ being established in the area of bridge 9799, 'D' Coy probed forward up the track running N.W. with 1 Pl, but having met a fairly strong enemy posn 300 on they withdrew again to the bridge and dug in for the night. A 'B' Coy recce patrol up the main road to the N.E. saw the enemy constructing a road block about 300 yds from their position. Another patrol reported INDAINGGON (9799) clear of enemy. Later that night an enemy patrol moving down the main road was engaged by 'B' Coy perimeter posts and casualties were probably inflicted on it since the enemy returned in greater strength and attacked the East end of the posn, presumably to cover the withdrawal of his wounded. Meanwhile, 'A' Coy having patrolled Pagoda 1 and found it empty, occupied it with 1 platoon. Casualties - 1 B.O.R. killed 2 Lushai S.Bs killed. 6 B.O.Rs wounded. 5 Lushai S.Bs wounded.
