Entry Patrols during the morning provided the following information:- (1) Village 9696 and TALOKKON 9697 clear of enemy (2) Enemy in chaung at 957994, at Pagodas 1 and 2 and Pagoda 961984 (hereafter referred to as Pagoda 3). 'C' Coy, therefore, with the intention of getting a footing on the right hand end of the ridge in Sq 9698 moved out by way of INWAING and cut the road INDAINGGOW 9799 - PYONCHAUNG 9893 at 963984, suffering 1 wounded from a sniper en route. 'B' Coy, meanwhile, having picked up 1 Jap straggler on Pt 270, pushed North and contacted 'C' Coy in the area of Pagoda 3. One Pl, however, who were carrying 3" Mtr amn had a number of cases of heat exhaustion, and becoming separated from the balance of the Coy early on, returned to Pt 270 for the night. At 1530 hrs 'C' Coy, moving on the track junc at 964988 came under M.M.G., L.M.G. and Grenade discharger fire from strong enemy posns East and West of the track junction and from Pagoda 2. The leading Platoon commander was killed and 5 men wounded and the Coy was forced to withdraw to the area of the PUNGYI KYAUNG at 962986 where they dug in for the night. 'B' Coy perimetered immediately South of 'C' Coy. As the track was as yet impassable to jeeps to this area, bullock carts were used for the first time by the bn, to take out rations and water. A bridge was, however, completed by 2100 hrs across the chaung at 952975, a platoon of 29 Ind Fd Coy working under the protection of 2 secs of 'D' Coy. 'A' Coys location remained the same, but their posn was considerably strengthened by the arrival of 'B' Coy 11th Sikhs, less 1 platoon. The Bn area was lightly shelled by 2 x 105 mm guns 3 times during the course of the day. No casualties were suffered but 'D' Coy, in order to avoid the possibility of casualties, and because they were intended to reinforce 'B' and 'C' Coys on 29th were withdrawn to M.S. 2 at about 1600 hrs. An aistrike was demanded before 0830 hrs 29th on the following targets (1) triangle bounded by following pts - track junc QA 963990 - Pg QA 961991 - Pg QA 961990. (2) area around Pg 962993 (3) line of chaung from 960995 to 963996. Casualties - 1 Offr killed (Lieut J. Pentreath) 6 ORs wounded. Reference to Appendice: None.
