Regiment 2nd Royal Berkshire
Location Pyawbwe, Burma
Entry The bn, less "A" and "D" Coys continued move South in M.T. at 0550 hrs. Reasonable progress was made until M.S. 207 was reached. The diversionary bridge at SIZONGON 7433 however was by this time impassable and no further move forward was made until approx 2200 hrs. Meanwhile the detachment under command Major Twidle received a warning order at 0030 hrs from 19 Div to move at 0830 hrs to M.S. 8. Road TOUNGOO-THANDAUNG. Task - to destroy elements of 31 Div H.Q. reported there. The move was to be made in rear of a composite force of 1 Coy 7th Bn Yorks and Lancs and 1 Coy 2/1 Punjab Regt. The task of this force was to secure the 1st bound at M.S. 4 and then turn South. By 1115 hrs this force had reached M.S.1. and had not contacted the enemy. So 2 R. The composite force mentioned above had by this time turned South. 'A' Coy with 2 Btys 115 Fd Regt in support successfully attacked the bridge, but on exploitation to the Pagodas at 963994 and 962990 ( hereafter referred to as Pagodas 1 and 2 respectively) 'A' Coy, moving astride the road on a 2 Pl front at 958990 came under heavy M.M.G. L.M.G. and Grenade discharger fire from Pagodas 1 and 2, and from the bridge at 956990, so the force withdrew to the bridge at 953988 for the night. Own casualties - 1 killed, 2 wounded. Enemy - 3 killed, 1 P.W. taken. He later escaped during the night. Three enemy patrols were observed during the night and were engaged by perimeter posns. Reference to Appendice: None.
