Entry Bn ordered to clear portion of MANDALAY CITY (West Side) in accordance with limits set out in Bde O.O. No 11. (Attd as Appx F.1.) 'C' Coy ordered to take over top of MANDALAY HILL from 'D' Coy in early morning, and 'D' Coy ordered to clear lower Southern slopes of Hill, supported by Mtrs & Arty. 2 I/c assumed co-ordinating command of the two Coys. During day these two Coys attacked Japs in strong position in stone building on top of hill just South of summit killing 27 Japs and 8 capturing M.M.Gs. Some Japs were still holding out in the next building and to the South, where they were located in tunnels within steep walls. During the morning hill area was shelled by two Jap guns from East. Bn H.Q., 'A' and 'B' Coys moved at 0930 hrs to area X Rds 584688 with intention of clearing all area West of Fort. During the day 'A' and 'B' Coys cleared area of MANDALAY West of FORT DUFFERIN. 'B' Coy supported by 1 Troop of Light Tanks (Stuarts of 1 Cav) carried out initial operations reaching 573657, with 1 Pl at 571640. A good deal of scattered opposition was met and some L.M.Gs at S.W. edge of Fort. Estimated enemy casualties - 20. The Pl which reached 571640 (on a line South of Fort) killed 10 or 12 Japs and destroyed a lorry which was driving fast towards them after dark. 'A' Coy followed 'B' Coy and reached 579667 and was joined by Bn H.Q. for night. 'A' Coy inflicted about 5 known enemy casualties during day. One Light tank supporting this Coy was hit by enemy A/TK gun fire and burnt out. Positions at nightfall were - Bn HQ & 'A' Coy at 578688. 'B' Coy less 1 Pl at 571658. 'C' and 'D' Coys on Mandalay Hill. Casualties - Enemy - 35 bodies counted by 'A' and 'B' Coys. Own tps , which had been relieved by 1/15 Punjab Regt, 9 O.Rs killed, 2 Offrs wounded (Lieut A.
