Entry 1 Pl Assams killed 1 Jap in area Pt 280 during early morning patrol. 0645 hrs. O Gp for final attack along East end of ridge (15r). Intention: 2 R Berks will attack and capture line inlet 693207 to track junction 694210. and exploit to Masts Nullah. Method: 'B' Coy with 1 R MMG under command to attack along ridge to track junc, feeling out for 'D' Coy on objective. 'D' Coy with troop Armd Cars and 25 pdr - direct fire under command and 1 Pl M.M.G. in support to capture Pagoda and inlet feeling in for @B' Coy on objective. 'A' Coy Reserve area 15r. All Coys to form up in Assembly posn in Chaung by 1130 hrs. Support: Heavy bombing A.G. not available owing to late demand. 2 Sqdns Hurribombers bombed and straffed Tgt 1240 - 1300 hrs. Armd Cars & Artillery - see above. Bn Mortars supporting Coys in their advance. 1145. 1 Coy Assam advanced to area Masts and patrol sent fwd to Chaung to act as an Eastern block to stop enemy escaping to North and East. 1240 & 1303. Air Strike. 1305. 'B' & 'D' Coys ordered to advance. 1330. 'B' Coy held up on Ridge awaiting Arty. 1350. 'D' Coy mortared on Ridge from far side of River. One Pl pinned down on East end. Armd Cars worked towards Pagoda area. Bashas in this area set alight by Mortar fire. 1405. 'B' Coy withdrew one platoon which had been pinned down by M.M.G. fire. Strong posn opposite them which was the same posn which faced 'D' Coy 3 days ago. 1420. B Coy reached posn 200 x East of previous nights posn. Casualties incurred - 3 killed 2 wounded. 1425 hrs. 'D' Coy - 1 Pl reached rear edge of Pagoda. 'B' Coy - Advancing 100 x West of Pagoda. 1445. B & D Coys withdrawing from Pagoda area to enable medium Arty fire to be brought on to enemy posn. After Air Strike during action spasmodic sniping on Bn H.Q. Ridge. Little further enemy activity except for intermittent firing up until dark. 2030. Violent explosion and large fire broke out in the Pagoda (still occupied by enemy). The fire continued to burn for several hours during the night. Enemy were seen to be trying to approach the fire, and Mortar fire was put down on them. Fire was probably caused by enemy trying to destroy amn and stores. No other enemy activity reported during night. Enemy casualties from our fire - 8. Armd Cars - 6 Assams - 1 Sikhs - 3. Some others probably killed by Air Strike but not accounted for.
