Entry | 0800 hrs.One pl of D Coy moved to village at 572455 to relieve pl of 2DLI, remainder of D to ODEINDAUNG(5743) to relieve 2pls of 2 DLI. B Coy sent a patrol of 6 to recce approaches from the WEST end of the bund. By crossing a 30 ft wide chaung at the beginning of the patrol at 553458, they approached to within 100 yds of the area, lay up, and observed. No movement seen. The patrol commander accordingly pushed further in, and acting on common sense, at once overran the position and found it deserted of enemy. He found the following: 1. Extensive earthworks sufficient to accommodate 30 to 35 men. 2. A great deal of documents. 3. A strong smell of death. 4. 2 x 75mm AA guns - type 88 - and a 20mm LAA gun. 5. A burned out trailer. 6. Plane spotting binoculars - (damaged) with 2 Jap field telephones. 7. A defensive ring of bunkers and foxholes sufficient to repel a heavy attack. 8. 50 rds HE ammo for the 75mm guns, thrown into the water by the Japs. |
