Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location MAUNGDAUNG, Burma
Entry The plan for operations on the enemy gun area is as follows:- At 1000 hrs 12 hurribombers rocket strike gun area. At [ ] end of the strike 99th field Regt RA fire for 5 minutes, plus 1pl 2 Manchester Regt and the Brigaded 3" mortars (12). All at rate 3. 3 minutes pause, and all fire again (rate 3) for 5 minutes. A Coy then move in to the attack from the EAST end. The estimated garrison (enemy) is not more than 20 men, with 3 guns of an AA type, believed 47 mm or larger. Approach from EAST or WEST is difficult, as the gun area is on a [ ] side. See air photo attached. The air and arty and mortar strike was accurate, and A commenced edging forward, one pl up. They were met by accurate sniping fire from a series of foxholes and bunkers astride the bund, and even when it was tried to right and left hook, the result was the same. It became obvious that only by accepting fairly heavy casualties, in [ ] the position across 150 yards of open ground covered by enemy fire plus at least one gun, could the position be taken. The attack was, therefore, called off, for further plans to be made to try [ ] the guns out by other means, and possibly assault from the EAST. 1 Jap was killed. Own casualties - nil. During the night own arty continued harassing. Brigade letter no 02500, ref future ops received. Remarks. Killed. 5187497 Pte BUGLER R.
