Entry | C.O.s orders for advance on axis FORT HENRY (138535) - MALEGYIN (180515) attached. 0800 hrs. Enemy 75mm gun fired 5 rds into Bn area. No casualties. 0830 hrs. C Coy push to Sansage. In accordance with the orders for the advance A and D Coys pushed forward and as they passed through C Coy, very accurate enemy shelling (105 and 75mm) commenced which followed the leading troops throughout the advance causing casualties - both wounded and shell shock. The advance continued, however, until A and D Coys reached HORACE, when they met enemy sniper, LMG and grenade discharger fire. It was obvious that the areas of NORTH SPUR, EGG and RECCE HILL were held by the enemy. The following plan was made 1. C right, B left to attack and capture Egg and North Spur respectively, with a mounted patrol from 2 Recce Regt to sweep South and try to occupy Recce Hill area. 2. Arty support: 16th Fld Regt RA firing on the two objectives for 20 minutes, before the assault. (1440 - 1500 hrs). 3. 1 tp of tanks (3. D.G) with each Coy. 4. Zero hour for assault 1500 hrs. 1500 hrs. B and C Coys assault. As they cross the start line (HORACE) they were met by strong LMG, rifle and grenade fire. In addition 75mm shells fell on B Coy plus mortars. One tank was knocked out, and the Coy (B) suffered casualties. It became obvious that unless the attack was stopped B Coy would be decimated. The CO accordingly ordered B and C Coys to withdraw, and the Bn consolidated on Kidney for the night. Casualties: Jap: 5 killed Own: as detailed overleaf (sheet 7). A quiet night: Hot food was brought up to the Bn. Reference to Appendices: appendix no.2 Remarks: KILLED. 1802370 Pte DONOVAN J.B. (RA) 11005243 Pte BRAMLEY J.B.
