War Diary

1945-03-05
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location MAUNGDAUNG, Burma
Entry 0900 hrs. Main HQ and HQ Coy move into C Coy area. 1100 hrs. Burmese agent reports 15 Japs in TAMABIN, living in NE corner of village. 1845 hrs. Jitter party of 1 officer and 2 sections of the Battle patrol to TAMABIN area. Plan: at 1900 hrs, 1 section with rifles and 3 automatics to area 139510, with lay back section at 129524. At 1930 hrs own arty will fire 5 rds arty gunfire on TAMABIN and the pagoda area NORTH of it. Then a pause of 5 minutes whilst automatics and rifles fire towards the village. At 1940 hrs 5 more rds arty gunfire. It was hoped that this deceptive attack would produce return fire from the Japs, and definitely establish presence of Japs in the village area. In fact, when jitter took place, no return of fire was made by Japs. 2300 hrs. Jitter patrol (Jap) outside D Coy wire. No casualties either side. Weather: Very hot by day (thermometer reading in shaded ammo pit was 94 degrees F). Cool at night.
