Entry | 0630 hrs. D Coy sent out a patrol to 218592. They reported "No enemy seen". 0830 hrs. The C.O. attended a conference at DIVISION, when details were given by the Divisional Commander of the plan for crossing the Irrawaddy, and the subsequent advance on Mandalay. These details are TOP SECRET and may not be disseminated to commanders lower than Battalion, or the like. During the day more river traffic (country craft) has passed up and down. We may now fire on these craft. Activity has been observed from all O.Ps, on SHWEPYSHIN ISLAND, KYAUKTALON VILLAGE and the area EAST of this village. These men are dressed in Burmese lungyies. Between 1200 and 1300 hrs dust could be seen rising from the area of a track EAST of KYAUKTALON. This appeared to be MT approaching and leaving the area. 1700 hrs. B Coy are sending a standing - listening patrol to 248594, following a report that a large barge capable of carrying troops in small numbers had been seen coming down the river WESTWARDS. 1830 hrs. This patrol, as it was getting into position, saw a number of soldiers just NORTH of the bank of the IRRAWADDY. There were NO other patrols of own troops out. The patrol at once withdrew, as per orders and reported to the C.O. 1915 hrs. Two listening posts were put out at M.R. 245595 and 244593 to listen and report by wireless anything seen. 2030 hrs. Both posts report nothing seen or heard. Accordingly the post at 244593 were ordered to move forward EAST to the area of the origional patrol at 248594, stay there the night and report any movement seen. 2115 hrs. Reports of 4 grenades and a small amount of small arms fire heard from the D.L.I. village NGATAVAN (2660). 2130 hrs. Both listening posted reported nothing seen or heard. 2200 hrs. Sounds of splashing water and wood striking from area 208579. Apart from this the night was quiet. DLI report that approximately 6 men tried to make their posts open fire without success. Weather: hot by day, temp approximately 99 degrees F. Slight breeze at night, fairly cold. Rations: Have improved during the last 4 days, cigarettes on payment are short. In the circumstances we are in now the men smoke fairly heavily. |
