| Entry | 'B' Coy and the SS Coy sent out patrols at 0530hrs to try to find the correct path but apart from reports that the enemy was in position in the top of the ridge above the Bn box. The SS Coy reported that they had possibly found a path. The C.O wished to make certain but he was ordered to push on. The R.W.F. took over our boxes completely and the Bn moved on. Before Main Hq had left the box heavy sniping started and an attack developed. Meantime the Bn had been informed that a path could not be found and the C.O. decided to form a four Coy box about 250 yards beyond last night's position. The situation now was that the Bn less 1 sec of B Coy and main Hq (which were cut off in the R.W.F. box area) was complete and forming a box whilst in contact with the enemy. The R.W.F. box was broken by pressure from the enemy and they began to withdraw. It was at this stage that the Bde Comdr who was in the box was wounded. The adjutant placed main Hq under the command of Lt Col Tetley R.A. (99th Fd Regt) as he did not seem inclined to withdraw and orders had been received from the 2i/c R.W.F. to pull out. Main Hq did a small rear guard action and when it seemed that everybody else had withdrawn they pulled out and joined a box further back which had been formed by the 2 D.L.I. The situation now was that the enemy were sitting across the Bn's L of C. The R.W.F. Coy which had formed a one Coy box i.e. had taken over from 'C' Coy withdrew and the C.O. retook their positions with 'D' Coy. He then formed a 3 Coy box with the remainder of the Bn. He was told by the Bde Comdr that he could withdraw at his discretion. The Div Comdr later repeated this but the C.O. said that he would stay where he was and try to reach the Crest the next day. Remarks: Later at about 1700 hrs. The Burma Regt retook the box vacated by the R.W.F. |
