Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location RAIPUR, Burma
Entry Approach march due to start at 0430hrs postponed for one hour owing to very heavy rain. The start was agained postponed for one hour and the Bn finally moved off at 0630hrs. The order of march was 143 S.S Coy,(under command) who were to lead the way through the jungle, C Coy, D Coy and Bn Tac HQ, A Coy, B Coy and Bn Main HQ. Tps under command, one battery commander R.A. (Major Stewart-Liberty, two F.O.O.'s, Capt D Mayne R.A. and Lt Ward R.A. Progress was slow and difficult owing to heavy rain and thick jungle. At about 1230hrs Major MacGeorge - commanding 143 SS Coy told the Commanding Officer that he could not find the way to the crest and the exact position in the jungle was not known. The C.O. had the R.A put some sounds down on our objective and by judging the direction of the sound it was agreed that we were at approx 490 635. The C.O decided to form a box for the night consisting of D, B, A, and HQ Coys. C Coy was orderd to form a box about 300 yards from the remainder of the Bn and 143 SS Coy patrolled from this box to find a route to the Crest. The wireless sets were not working owing to the wet but fortunately a signal line had been paid out behind the Bn so that it was possible to communicate with Bde. Supplies were brought up by bearers from the Bombay Grenadiers at 1630hrs 'C' Coy reported that their box was being sniped with automatics. The SS Coy - which had been patrolling - reported that they had not found a path to the Crest. A quiet night. Reference to Appendices: See Appendix IX and X
