Regiment | 1st Royal Berkshire |
---|---|
Location | RAIPUR, Burma |
Entry | At 0030 hrs on the night of 27/28 Apr, the enemy put down intense mortar fire over the whole area, using, apart from his own British 2" H.E. This preliminary bombardment lasted until approximately 0130 hrs, by which time it was obvious that the enemy intended a serious attack. Close and confused fighting continued until dawn and a small number of Japs managed to infiltrate inside the perimeter, notably to the areas of the "summer house" and R.A.P. It was during this period that the M.O. was wounded by a grenade. From 0515 hrs to 0615 hrs the area was again subjected to heavy mortar fire and an extremely lucky shot wounded Lt. Oliver - Jones, the C.S.M. and two O.R.'s of "C" Coy. The situation was well in hand by 0700 hrs with only a few Japs in an area which had been occupied by a platoon of D.L.I. in A Coys posns. It was noted that a Jap killed by the summer house carried only three grenade sacks; two empty with the third containing four 36 grenades. Our casualties were light whereas 41 Japs killed were claimed by the garrison. During the day further efforts were made to get the tanks up into D Coys area, these were unsuccessful. Two officers and 75 O.R.'s rejoined the Bn. A/C. Nineteen enemy fighters were observed attacking the gun park at 0800 hrs, damage not known. The normal supplies were dropped with partial success. Remarks: Capt N.H. Golledge (R.M.O.) and Lt. F. J. Oliver Jones wounded and evacuated. Lt. B. Dunn and Lt. A.D. Veal rejoined from road party. |
