War Diary

1943-05-01
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location Indin, Burma
Entry Enemy planes passed overhead early AM, and dropped bombs in area KANYINDAN 3338. Dropped a mixture A.P and incendiary which burnt 5000 galls petrol, destroyed 2 x 25 Pound guns and killed 5 B.O.R.S., 30 - 40 B.O.R.S and I.O.Rs wounded. Second raid P.M. planes flew over very high and bombed BAWLI BAZAR bridge, but did not hit it. PATROLS. 1) 09-15 LT WHITEHEAD returned from 1440 (441 340). Reported very hard going towards top, and perpendicular cliffs 100ft high at west which could not be scaled. Enemy N.M.S. Time out 8 hrs. In 4 hrs. 2) 16.00 Sgt DYER returned from 1440 - report similar to above, but Sgt DYER had managed to scale the cliff with the aid of trees and reach the top. No view owing to thick trees. 3) Sgt MURPHY from KANTHE patrol had left 16-30 30/4 and laid up for the night in KINGYAUNG 3831 started of [sic] 05.30 1/5 for MYAUK KINGYAUNG 4035. Encounter with elephant which made off after patrol comd fired 2 revolver shots, met R.W.F. patrol who had nothing to report - crossed ridge in 4335, down other side and then south along E side of hills. Thought he saw 55 Bde from 4534 but did not make contact. Returned via MATHON CHAUNG 4632 - TON CHAUNG 4431 - HKAMWEYWA 4232. Map very inaccurate and Sgt Murphy unable to give exact route. This also the experience of all previous patrol leaders. Many villages and chaungs marked are non existant and many others not on map are on the ground. Particular instances of this are 1) HKAMWEYWA 4232 a non existant village and a large mullah 400 ft deep on W face and 800ft on E face on W side of saddle near Pt 1440. Jungle on both these routes very thick indeed and animal life at night ceaseless and noisy. GENERAL. 36 Bde still concentrated near BUTHIDAUNG and have not moved S as was expected. 6 Bde is no longer Div reserve and therefore not at 2 hours notice to move. All extra mules returned to their Coy.
