1943-04-02
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location Indin, Burma
Entry D coy's withdrawal was complete by 0500 hrs and they were at once ordered to take and hold 191 feature - A and C Coys Holding the Pass until this was done. C Coy had withdrawn to the high ground to the left of the pass arriving at 0400 hrs. A Coy had been sent out to stiffen the force. By 0900 hrs D coy had established themselves and command post was moving back. At approx 1100 hrs the enemy put up a M.G Post overlooking the line of withdrawal with a fixed line down the path which was the axis. This caused a few casualties and also all the mules to bolt - so that all stores had then to be man handled up to 191from the old position. C Coy withdrew at 0930 hrs and took up there [s.i.c] positions at 1200 hrs on the feature - A at 1130 hrs. The whole force was established on the feature by 1400hrs. The positions which were held were strong from attack but could gain only long range observation over the approaches to INDIN and KYAUKPANDUYWAMA from ATCT NANDA. The ranges were too great for Small Arms fire to do anything but harrass enemy columns using these approaches. Similarly the Gunners could be used to do the same. Communications were poor - only one 11 Set working which had to be used to keep touch wiith HQ HOPFORCE and serve the guns: as well only 4 batteries were able to be carried up the hill and these had to be conserved as our stay was not limited. Sufficient Bn signal equipment was carried up to keep all Coys in touch by L/T. As the mules had bolted and Coys had to carry out a withdrawal no rations arrived on top. D Coy found a water point but the first party down was ambushed and so had to be closed : shortly after another was opened which remained so during the whole period. Remainder of day spent in digging in making position as strong as possible.
