Entry | Bn Exercise with 1. R/S to practise lessons of Jungle warfare learnt in Malaya. This exercise was in two phases. Phase I taking up a defensive position along the axis of a main road, in which position we were attacked after the enemy's leading elements had been ambushed. The action then developed into defensive measures against an encircling attack. In Phase II the Bn carried out an encircling attack on the I R/S in a similar defensive position. The main points brought out were (1) the necessity for patrols to find out the direction and flank of the enemy encirclement and (2) The extreme difficulty of doing this in close jungle. (3) The rapid action of encircling Coys in the attack and ensuring that they came back onto the road to attack the enemy in the correct place as planned by the Bn Commander.
