Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location Ahmednagar, India
Entry From August 25 to September 1st, the Battalion moved to the Combined Training Centre, KHARAKVASLA, for training in Combined Operations. For details of move, see App. C. Prior to going, all companies had done a fortnight's intensive training in Land Rowing, Rope Climbing, and Water Rowing at Kapurwadi Tank. This proved of great assistance in the training at Kharakvasla. General notes on Combined Operations were issued to all companies. (see Appendix D.) The week at Kharakvasla was enjoyed by all ranks, in spite of the fact that for the last four days they were permanently wet. The training culminated in a Battalion Night Raid which was devised on similar lines to the Brünsvaal Raid. The exercise was considered a great success and some valuable lessons were learnt. The Landing Time of one Company was considerably retarded owing to a regrettable oversight on the part of the amateur navy who were navigating the assault craft. They slipped the Fleming Boats into Reverse Gear by mistake when the craft were half way to their destination. However, the resulting delay did not disorganize the successful capture of the objective. The Battalion was ordered to cover the last 25 miles of the return journey by March Route. The distance was covered in little more than 7 hours actual marching time, in spite of the fact that four days of permanently wet boots had considerably softened everyone's feet.
