Regiment 4th Wiltshire
Location France
Entry The bn arrived at conc area at DANVOU and at dawn came under heavy shell fire many cas being caused in D coy, among them Capt. R. A. Lowe, who died of wounds, and Lieuts. R. August and P.E. Bird wounded. As the bn had entered the area in the dark it was impossible to know at the time whether our posns were under en observation. It was now clear that they were and it was decided to move to a valley where they would be out of sight. However this was also under observation and the shelling continued. The situation was made worse by tpt breakdowns in narrow lanes causing traffic blocks which were not sorted out till the afternoon. Three Loyd carriers were hit and caught fire. At 1400 hrs the bn marching tps left for the assault on MONT PINCON. We were reserve bn and conc behind 4 SOM LI on left. 5 WILTS being on right. 4 SOM LI were held up by MG fire and did not make much progress, while 5 WILTS penetrated a mile beyond the SL after heavy cas. The bn then moved over to follow 5 WILTS. In the meantime our own tkd had reached the summit and the bn was able to march up to the top arriving at 2230 hrs. The en had withdrawn from the forward slopes but a coy was discovered at the top, 500 yes from our posns. It was decided to remain where we were and dig in on the reverse slope owing to a thick mist which came down shortly afterwards.
