Entry | [Pages 7-8] At about 0600 hrs one offr and about 60 men surrendered to B coy who sent them to Bn HQ. The offr, who spoke English, said that he had brought all tps occupying the Chateau at 994627 with him except for a party of wounded under the MO. This Chateau had caused considerable trouble towards the end of the attack and had been pounded both by our arty and by tks with solid shot to such an exptent it was in the process of bearing a close resemblance to a pepper pot. During the course of the attack and after it the total of 274 prisoners passed through the bn. Many of them claimed to be either Russians, Poles or Czecks - No confirmation or otherwise was obtained of these claims. The Chateau was visited under a Red Cross flag and the wounded and MO and his 4 SBs evacuated on Loyd carriers to bn RAP. Numerous documents were also found there together with marked maps which contained infm of sufficient value as to be sent to Army HQ. Two deserters from 978 Regt surrendered to Lt. C.J. Mills, C coy - they gave useful enfm. Night was comparatively quiet with bursts of mortaring and shelling on fwd coys. Local patrols were sent out. |
