War Diary

1944-11-22
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location RAIPUR, Burma
Entry The convoy left PALEL at 0530 several trucks broke down on the GHATS immediately outside PALEL but all except one had rejoined by the end of the enforced halt at 0800 hrs at 15:51 when the road was closed to all down traffic until 1030 hrs. The convoy proceeded to STAGING CAMP 2 (2 1/2 to 3 1/2 MS TAMU - KALAWA RD). The area was very small and very poor only 3 cookhouses provided and sufficient latrines to accomodate 14 men at a time. Transport was very cramped the journey was long owing to the steadily deteriorating road conditions. The last few miles being in dust cloud. Owing to the issue of petrol in 44 gallon drums there was a considerable delay in refuelling which was not completed until after dark. The short heavy showers of rain damped us down for about 1/2 hour but the weather cleared and the night was fine.
