Entry | At 4 AM the attack commenced behind a creeping barrage (Barrage Table attached marked H) The ECAILLON River was found to be deeper than was expected and most men went in up to their waists. Near RUESNES on topping the rise in Q24 heavy MG fire was encountered from the direction of PARQUIAUX but the line continued to advance and the objective was captured and consolidated a total advance of 4000 yards over two rivers and difficult country. On the final objective the Battn was in touch on the Right with 23/R Fus but the 9th Northumberland Fusiliers on the Left were driven back to the line LA FOLIE - LARBLIN leaving the Left flank exposed for a depth of 2500 yards. Accordingly C and D Coys formed defensive flank facing NW from R7a 5.2 to Q18 c 5.9 with A and B Coys holding the Road in R7 a and d. 1/KRRC continued the defensive flank in a SW direction to LA FOLIE. Battn H.Q.rs were established in a ravine at Q28 b 9.9 in communication with Bde H.Q.rs at ESCARMAIN and later by telephone with the Coys. About 300 prisoners and 10 machine guns were captured during the advance. At about 1.45 pm the enemy attempted to counter-attack, but the attack failed to make any progress and the line remained intact. During the evening the 4/Oxfords (61st Division) attacked and occupied the high ground in Q11 and Q12 and touch was obtained with them in Q12 c and d by 3 AM on 25/10/18. |
