Entry Enemy shelling continued to be heavy, especially in the early morning. At 5.30 AM parties from A and B Companies under 2/LT KIRBY moved forward up GONG Trench and the S end of SLAG AVENUE with the object of establishing posts on the W bank of the Canal from the SPOIL HEAP to K14 D 6510. The operation was completely successful ands posts were established at K20 B2, K20 B46, K14D 6510 and one in SLAG AVENUE at about K14 D55. 9 prisoners and 1 MG were captured our casualties were 2/LT KIRBY wounded 1 OR killed and 3 Ors wounded. At 10 AM about 50 of the enemy counter-attacked the post at K14 D6510 over the top from FAGAN SUPPORT after a short fight they were driven back with loss. our posts remained intact. At 3 PM D Coy moved into OBL Avenue to support A Coy and established Coy HQ with A Coy. C Coy moved Coy HQ and the platoon from behind HERMIES into the positions vacated by D Coy. At about 4 PM under cover of a heavy artillery and trench mortar barrage which had been going on for an hour the enemy in considerable strength again counter-attacked and succeeded in regaining the posts on the Canal Bank and the post in SLAG AVENUE. we established blocks in GONG TRENCH and the S end of SLAG AVENUE near the junction with OBL AVENUE. Our casualties during the whole day were 2/LT KIRBY and 2/LT AL:LSON wounded [blank] ORs killed [blank] ORs wounded and [blank] ORs missing. The night was comparatively quiet.
