Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, FRONT LINE (RIGHT) BOIRY-ST-MARTIN
Entry A very wet and miserable day. Enemy trench mortars and "Grenatenwerfer" very active all day. Casualties 2 OR wounded. Casualties during the month. Officers_______________NIL killed_______________1 wounded (Lieut Shipton) OR's_________________NIL killed______________10 wounded Effective Strength 30/4/1918_______30 officers and 1186 OR - Total 1216 Ration Strength 30/4/1918_______28 officers and 749 OR - Total 777 April was not an exhilarating month for the Battn. At its commencement scarcely 200 of the "old" hands were left to us and though in subsequent weeks we received large parties of reinforcements transferred from other units, they were all absolutely without experience and very young. These drafts were thrust on us while we were in the throes of moving from one sector to another - we were without our "nucleus" - and we were scarcely given time to post them to Companies and get platoons nominally organised before we were again put into the line and expected to live up to our old reputation for good work and smart appearance. This entailed very hard work on the Officers and NCO's and good progress was made and some training effected with the help of the 2nd Divn Depot Battn - but it was lucky we were in a "peace" sector. The end of the month found us as at the beginning, hoping for a few weeks out of the line for training and organisation.
