War Diary

1918-03-26
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, In constant Engagement
Entry At dawn, with other units of the Brigade, the Battn moved back to the O.B.L. near BEAUMONT HAMEL (HAWTHORN RIDGE), taking over 200 yards of the trenches from Q10 central the Q10d.26. This line the Battn held all day without coming into close contact with the enemy though the inter-change of rifle and machine-gun fire at long range was ceaseless and the hostile artillery fire gradually increased in intensity. In this position the feeling was at last prevalent that the final line of resistance had been reached, and that our own artillery was again in position behind us and re organized (sic) to support the infantry. Rumours were also current that fresh divisions were close at hand to take over the line. In the afternoon these rumours were confirmed by the appearance of parties of the NZR (ANZAC CORPS) in our midst. These troops came to us "over the top" under the impression that our troops were holding the line and they suffered more casualties than they need have for this reason. At 10.30 pm we received orders to move back to MAILLY-MAILLET. We reached this village at midnight but the troops were condemned to spend yet another night in the open, - but it was a quiet night and the men had fair rest and hot food.
