War Diary

1918-01-27
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, Front Line. LAVAQUERIE RIGHT
Entry Very misty morning allowing free movement above ground the whole morning. The trenches were full of mud and practically impassable, but the posts were dry and provided with fairly good shelter. In the afternoon the mist cleared and all movement had to cease. Casualties 1 OR wounded. After dusk A & D Coys relieved B & C Coys. 2/Lieut Johnston and 25 OR left for 1 months attachment to 483 Field Co RE for training as sappers mates. We were ordered by Brigade to reconnoitre German post in sap opposite No 29 post with a view to a silent raid, and the capture or extermination of the garrison, but a patrol under 2/Lieut Titley (D Co) found wire too thick to allow the approach of any numbers in the bright moonlight and the project was postponed.
