Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, BILLETS HERMIES
Entry Order for relief in the line received (No 201 attached) The Battn rested and drew tools for use in the line. Dinners at 12.30pm, moved off by platoons at 1.30 by way of Canal du Nord. Our dispositions in the line is shown on attached map marked A. Relief was considerably delayed because our guides refused to lead forward until it was quite dark. We found that the Right advanced post had been abandoned during the day. We reoccupied it without incident. Relief finally complete at 9.50pm, casualties 1 OR wounded. A quiet night. Good work was accomplished consolidating CABLE TRENCH (later named WATSON TRENCH) and cleaning out HUGHES SWITCH., which proved to be a very deep and wide trench - almost like a sunken road. The 3 advanced posts were badly sited, shallow and unprotected by wire.
