War Diary

1917-12-04
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, FRONT LINE NEAR BOURLON
Entry The morning passed quietly except for occasional artillery duels and the usual shelling of Btn HQ and the road with 4.2" and 77mm. Another reorganisation of Brigade front had been ordered to take place this night (order attached). This was cancelled and orders received for evacuation of the BOURLON SALIENT (order attached). In accordance with this order Companies moved out at 15 minutes interval between 1 and 1.45am (notes for Battn order attached) Btn HQ moved off behind the last Company. Rearguards (2 sections and 1 LG of A Coy under 2/Lt A J HARRIS and 2 sections and 1 LG of C Coy under 2/Lt A S Denham) remained in the line until 3.15 am and were withdrawn without enemy interference. 1 platoon of C Co under Lieut G C Denis de Vitre [?] also remained behind at the SUGAR FACTORY until 5.30am to protect the left flank of 47th Divn during the withdrawal. They got away without casualties or incident and reached billets at 8.30am. The only regrettable part of the operation so far as the Battn was concerned was that it was found impossible to get our spare LG magazines, 2 captured German M.Gs and other equipment, all of which had to be thrown away down a well. The Battn moved back to HERMIES. Casualties nil. [Marginal notes] 99 Bde O.O. 198 and O.O. 199
