War Diary

1917-12-02
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, FRONT LINE NEAR BOURLON
Entry A comparatively quiet day on our front, very little shelling excepting an occasional 77mm or 4.2 on the Sugar Factory and its precincts, until 4pm when BOURLON WOOD - THE FACTORY and the main road were subjected to a bombardment of gradually increasing intensity and at 4.30pm our guns of all calibres opened fire and continued for nearly an hour. It subsequently transpired that an attack had developed on our left, and had been completely repulsed. There was no hostile movement on our front. At 8.10pm the 7th and 8th Btns LONDON REGT on our RIGHT attacked and advanced our line to high ground in E.17.d & b and E.18.a. At the same time the 23/RF on our immediate RIGHT advanced their right flank. The operation was successful and 8 MGs and a number of prisoners were taken. Enemy retaliation was feeble. When this disturbance had settled down D Company relieved C Company on LEFT of our line without casualty. We had no outside help with wiring and consolidating this night, but good progress was made and A Company in the CENTRE established new posts 150 to 200 yds in front of their original line with HQ in a gunpit and this secured a far more advantageous position with a first rate field of fire.
