War Diary

1917-11-30
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, Support Line W of BOURLON WOOD
Entry At 8.45am the enemy put a terrific box barrage of all calibres on the FACTORY and its precincts practically isolating our Btn HQ and advanced in force along a line BOURLON village - QUARRY WOOD. As the attack developed we were reinforced by 23/RF. Along the greater part of the front attacked the enemy attempt to break through was successfully dealt with by Artillery and MG fire and never assumed a very serious aspect in our sector except on the R flank held by B Company where very heavy fighting took place. An account and plan of this fighting written by the Commanding Officer is attached. Enemy attacks were renewed in the afternoon but our line was never broken. It was a proud day for the Battn and congratulatory messages which were received and are attached were undoubtedly well earned. In the evening B Coy 23/RF moved up from support and reoccupied the posts on W of Sunken Road without a fight and the night passed comparatively quietly. Considering the very heavy nature of the fighting our casualties were not heavy. Capt E P JACKSON commanding C Company was killed instantaneously by a sniper. 2/Lieuts SMEATON and PALMER were wounded. OR 12 killed. 25 wounded. 20 missing. 6 to hospital. Total 3 Officers 63 OR. Effective strength of Battn. 41 Officer 897 OR Ration strength of Battn 32 Officer 732 OR. N.B. Casualties of 30/11/17 have not been deducted.
