Regiment | 1st Royal Berkshire |
---|---|
Location | France, BEAUMETZ LES CAMBRAI |
Entry | Orders received at 5pm and confirmed in detail at 7pm that the 99th Bde would take over that night from 107th Infantry Bde a portion of the new line facing N just W of BOURLON WOOD. The 23/RF on R with this Bn in support and 1/KRRC on L with 22/RF in support. The Battn moved off at 9.30 and proceeded by way of main BAPAUME - CAMBRAI road to Sugar Factory E29a (sheet 57c NE 1/20000). We were supposed to relieve the 2/5 KOYLI and 2/5 Y&L by 12 MN but our march was hindered by other troops on the road and when we reached the FACTORY at about 12 MN we found that the Battns in question were attacking BOURLON village at 6.20am and had not been notified of the relief. After some delay we found accommodation for the men and eventually took over quarters vacated by 2/5 KOYLI and 2/5 Y&L when they went out to the attack. A&B Coys on R N of road and C&D Coys on L S of road. Btn HQ in Chateau E of Sugar Factory. There was no shelling during the move and we suffered no casualties. In this it appears we were very fortunate, favoured perhaps by the weather which was rough and dark owing to heavy snow storms, for the main road was the target for constant shelling and machine gun fire every night during our tour of this sector. |
