Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, Front Line CAMBRIN RIGHT
Entry Some rain. Advanced orders for the relief of the 2nd Division by the 25th Division were received and later in the day the CO of 9th Loyal North Lancashire Regt with an advance party of officers and NCO's came into the line and details for our relief by them were discussed. At 11.30pm gas operations were carried out on a very large scale. On our own front a number of 4" Stokes mortar gas shells were fired from QUARRY. On our immediate left a gas cloud was released from 1200 cylinders in the front line trenches and to the North and South a large number of gas shells were fired from projectors. The operation went off without a hitch and earned the congratulations of the Army Commander, but in the opinion of experts the wind was too strong for complete success. Just before MN orders received from Brigade giving full details of relief to take place next day.
