War Diary

1917-09-20
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, Billets BEUVRY
Entry Weather fine but dull. Dinners at noon and at 1pm the Battn moved off via SAILLY LA BOURSE - NOYELLES and relieved 5/Sherwood Foresters in front line CAMBRIN RIGHT. Relief complete 5pm. Casualties nil, although enemy heavy TM's were very active at the time and later. The Battn took over the exact dispositions of 5/Sherwood F (viz A Coy R front - C Coy Centre front - D Coy Left front - B Coy in support in RESERVE TRENCH) but on completion of relief reverted to the old dispositions (A&B Coys together as No1 Coy under command of Capt M P PUGH MC on RIGHT and C&D Coys together as No2 Coy under Capt E P JACKSON on LEFT). It was found that the 139th Bde had entirely altered the method of holding the line - occupying only 5 advanced posts which they had surrounded by wire, many of the old posts and saps being covered in with barbed wire. A number of the tunnel entrances had also been closed. Our old posts were however practically unaltered and in good condition but NORTHAMPTON TRENCH had been neglected and was impassable in many places. QUARRY TUNNEL had been blown in near L Coy HQ that morning and was under repair.
