War Diary

Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, Billets GORRE CHATEAU
Entry A fine warm day. Parade Service at 10 am conducted by Padre RAVEN. In the afternoon a spirited football match A&B Coys vs C&D Coys ended in a draw. During the night about 11.15 - 12 a number of 5.9" shells presumably intended for our gun positions fell near the CHATEAU. The Battn fell in on alarm posts, but the bombardment soon ceased causing no casualties. It is related of the GORRE YMCA Chaplain that, when the shelling commenced, he slipped on his clothes, felt under his bed for his tin hat, clapped it on his head and got out into the open. Some time afterwards he discovered that his helmet had a handle on it. Same working parties as on the previous day.
